Ask a better question

What an interviewing mindset can bring to meetings, professional conversations and public discussion.

A conversation can move quickly without becoming clearer. The question that changes its direction is often the one that asks someone to explain what they mean.

Give broad words a practical meaning

Terms such as “quality”, “success” and “improvement” can sound like agreement while concealing different expectations. Asking what a word means in a particular situation helps people move from a shared label to a shared understanding.

In a meeting, “What would we expect to see if this were working?” can produce a more useful discussion than another round of general commitments. A concrete example gives colleagues something to examine and makes differences in interpretation easier to notice.

Follow the answer

An interview can become mechanical when the next prepared question receives more attention than the answer being given. Preparation matters, but so does listening closely enough to recognise a missing explanation or an unexpected detail.

The same principle applies in professional conversations. Someone may describe a difficulty that does not fit the original agenda. A careful follow-up can establish whether it changes the decision being discussed. That does not mean following every diversion; it means being attentive to information that matters.

Make uncertainty speakable

A question can invite explanation or suggest that only one answer is acceptable. When understanding is the aim, it helps to leave room for a person to say that they are unsure, disagree or need more information. Certainty obtained through pressure can leave important questions unresolved.

My background in journalism continues to shape how I approach communication. I value questions that separate observation from interpretation and allow an argument to be examined. Before leaving a conversation, I try to identify what has become clearer, what remains open and what needs to happen next. A good question earns its place through the understanding it makes possible.
